I absolutely wish I worked in a world where accurate estimations didn’t matter, but the reality is that our clients often need an early indicator of the cost of delivery. Indeed I don’t think this approach is actually more time consuming than a simple poker scoring approach. Most of the time in both approaches is actually spent debating, which is usually an indicator of vagueness, complexity etc.

I tend to try and ascertain the score a bit earlier on than the sprint planning session in which the backlog item is being committed to, as this allows us to roughly plan ahead.
